Local Herpes Groups - Meet Some Really Great People
Local herpes groups are an important part of the herpes community. A herpes (HSV) or human papillomavirus (HPV) diagnosis can leave people feeling “different” around their group of friends, family. Many feel isolated with nobody to talk to about their current situation. One of the most amazing and dynamic aspects of the herpes community are its social and support groups throughout the country! These local herpes groups are open to pretty much anybody with herpes and HPV. While HWerks provides plenty of opportunities to interact with others online for dating, social and support we are only part of a growing network.
Local groups are not run by HWerks but rather dedicated volunteers who put in countless hours coordinating, running and planning events for their group. Each local herpes group is different. Some groups focus on herpes support while others are all about the social aspects or a little of both.
Local Herpes Groups Expand Your Reach
Not every HWerks member is in a local herpes group and vice versa. There are also people active in local groups who do not participate online at all. So, always check both places! If you do not have a local herpes group in your area or it is not active, that does not mean you are the only one in your area. People join HWerks every day from all over and new groups are popping up everywhere!
Facebook Has Herpes...Groups
Reading through the local group pages, you may notice a “Secret Facebook Herpes Group” section that only lists the group’s location. These are listed for reference only to let others know a group(s) does exist in their area. A secret Facebook group is joined by invitation only from another member of that group. We wrote an entire page about how to join these Secret Facebook Herpes Groups and how they work.
Don't Be Shy
If your local herpes group is not that active, don’t worry. A group’s success relies on participation. Don’t be shy! Groups WANT new members and have to start from somewhere. In many cases, there will be new people in the group and feeling the same way you do.
Groups are just a great way to meet people, in your area, who also have herpes. Like you, other members of the group do not want their “situation” known. Discretion and privacy are respected. Usually, if a group has a get-together, the topic does not even come up…especially if it is in a public place.

How To Join A Local Herpes Group
Joining a local herpes group isn’t difficult. Just understand that a group may take some precautions to protect the privacy of the group. This is a good thing. The first step to joining a local herpes group is initial contact. Most likely, you just have to send the group an email. If the group is a secret Facebook group, you will have to reach out to one of the administrators. They may ask how you heard of the group, what type of herpes you have…etc. They are just basic questions to make sure you are trying to join the right group.
